What is OPAL?

Opals are the result of time, as they form over millions of years, while layers of silica and volcanic rock overlap, trapping tiny spheres of water and oxygen in their wake.

For the ancient inhabitants of Mexico the Opal was known as “Vitziltecpal” or “Piedra Colibrí”, this poetic name had been given due to its similarity with the sparkling plumage of those small birds that they adored.

The Opal was highly valued in Mesoamerican cultures, as jewelry for nobles and priests. Opals extracted from the Queretaro region were used by the Aztecs in ceremonial ornaments.

The Opal mines in Mexico where gem quality Opal is mined are Querétaro and Jalisco. In other parts of the world such as Australia and Ethiopia, Opal is also mined.
Opal is a stone that can vary in purity, color and size. The purity of its crystals, the transparency they have, their colors, their iridescence, is better known as fire. The rarest opals are those that contain the 7 colors of the rainbow.

No two Opals can ever be the same, even if they are in the same stone; it is because of them that each Opal is UNIQUE.
